On September 28, 2024, the 9th Annual Dragon Boat Race of the North Carolina Triangle Area Asian Festival kicked off. The weather was truly perfect, with clear autumn skies, gentle breezes, and beautiful sunshine. Under the blue sky and white clouds, the park, with its swaying green trees, was bustling with visitors. There were thrilling dragon boat races, with teams eagerly preparing and working together in perfect harmony. The aroma of delicious food from different regions filled the air, making it impossible to resist. The cultural performances showcased the vibrant arts and traditions from various countries, each standing out in its own way, highlighting the richness of multiculturalism.

Some of us are packing food for customers, while others are managing stock from the warmers, calling out orders, introducing products, taking event photos, or coordinating with each other. One thing remains constant: the smiles on our faces. Our team radiates positivity, confidence, and enthusiasm, working seamlessly together in a fast-paced yet organized environment. It’s no surprise that visitors are often amazed at how a group of high school juniors and seniors, in their busiest academic years, can find the time and energy to dedicate to community service.

Earnings

We spent over two weeks planning the entire event, from contacting suppliers to renting the booth, and then purchasing and setting up the goods. By the end of the event, we had earned a total of $2,450.

Why Do We Do This?

When asked why we commit to these efforts, our team often talks about the desire to step outside our comfort zones and challenge ourselves. We handle everything ourselves – from researching and decision-making to sourcing goods from China, setting prices, processing, and managing the booth at the Asian Festival. Beyond large events, we also run weekly Saturday stalls at flea markets, selling handmade crafts, food, and a variety of products sourced from China.

Our goal is simple: to use the profits from these sales to help those in need. In doing so, we not only give back to the community but also develop our own skills in time management, teamwork, and leadership.
